How to Move 3,000 Miles Away in Four Weeks

I still don’t really understand how we moved, but we did with lots of help.

Living in the same place for 19 years, means that you acquire and store in the back of your closet a lot of things. The first step is to donate, gift or throw away anything in your house that you forgot you even had. Obviously, if it has sentimental value, keep it.

We gave away a ton of things.

Hiring a moving company wasn’t too hard since we were given one by my dad’s job. They are mainly rough looking men, with dirty-clean hands, black beanies and black hoodies, but sweet on the inside. They got everything out of the house in about a week. The men love to wrap the most insignificant items in paper. I’m pretty sure a broken phone charger I had was wrapped in about 30 layers of paper. At least they are careful!

Our cars were driven on a big truck, like the ones you avoid on the highway, toppled with other cars to California. It was weird handing off our only mode of transportation to a random man with our finger’s crossed that we would be reunited in 30 days.

In addition, I needed to pack my suitcase for what would be about 30 days in a hotel. There was just tons of packing all around the house.

Beside all of the physical stuff of moving your things across the country, you need to handle it emotionally as well. What kept me going is that my friends would be able to see me during the school semester. I did lose a lot of friendships because they couldn’t handle it. It’s okay though. Life goes on.

It will be weird when the last item is taken away from your house. You and your family just gather on the floor and hang out since all the furniture is gone.

It’s not easy moving across the country, let alone in 4 weeks. It can be done as long as you have help along the way.
